                        GRIMEBORN – An Opera Season

4 – 23 August 2008
After its successful launch last year, GRIMEBORN – An Opera Season is back at Arcola for three weeks of theatrical innovation from the frontline of contemporary music and performance.

Grimeborn was conceived to give young companies and old masters the opportunity to show their work in a venue that appreciates the diversity of theatrical forms and highlight the performance as much as the music.
This years’ festival, curated by Daniele Guerra, is set to break new ground on all fronts. Every night Arcola’s huge Studio 1 will be transformed to accommodate everything from the rarely staged Old Maid and the Thief by Gian Carlo Menotti to The Man with a Movie Camera by the renowned Michael Nyman, composer of The Piano.

Arcola Theatre’s artistic director Mehmet Ergen will direct Goodbye Barcelona, a new musical by Judith Johnson and Karl Lewkowicz set during the Spanish Civil War. Cult pop orchestra The Irrepressibles and the Conversations in Sound choir present Opera of Surveillance - expanding on their practice of "theatricalising the mundane", they will create an audio fantasia from audience experience. Mahler’s Kindertoten Lieder will be brought to life by cabaret artiste Dickie Beau and Britain’s foremost black female composer Erollyn Wallen’s Songbook: My Feet Will Take A Little While will be fully performed for the first time.

All performances at 8pm, Tickets £10
Box Office: 020 7503 1646
