DCMS conducts national study of voluntary arts
                                   activity in England

dates: 1-29 February

On 1 February, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport launched a national survey of amateur arts groups in England.

The survey will help focus attention on the wealth of amateur and voluntary arts opportunities enjoyed by millions of people across the country every day - often with little publicity. The research has the potential to be very useful for arts groups, who will be able to refer to the findings when applying for funding, and for policy-makers, who can use it to look at how amateur arts groups could be better supported. The results will be published in the summer.

Groups of voluntary and amateur participants from all artistic walks of life – from music, dance and crafts, to theatre, visual arts and literature - are being encouraged to participate by going to www.artsurvey.org.uk and completing a short online questionnaire before 29 February 2008..
As a thank-you for completing the survey you will be entered into a free prize draw. Three respondents will be selected at random and receive £150 for their group.

The Great Muses with Elkie Brooks Friday 29th February at 2.30-4pm

Writers and performers often inspire each other - some of the greatest entertainers in the world have had material specifically tailored to their persona and when the relationships really work, the alchemy creates copper-bottomed, gold-plated, 24 Carat hits

The Great Muses looks at the songs made famous by Liza Minnelli with John Kander and Fred Ebb (Maybe This Time/Cabaret/Stepping Out/And The World Goes Round), Burt Bacharach and Hal David with Dionne Warwick ( I'll Never Fall In Love Again/Do You Know The Way To San Jose/Thats What Friends Are For) plus Sammy Davis Junior with Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse (Candy Man/What Kind Of Fool Am I/Talk To The Animals)

This will be followed by a question and answer session with the incomparable Elkie Brooks about her experiences working with and performing the songs of the great tunesmiths.

One of Elkie's biggest hits - Pearl's A Singer was penned by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller who tailored material specially for Elvis and her albums include Screen Gems which contains many classics from the American Songbook including songs penned by Fats Waller, Sammy Fain and Rodgers & Hart and her album Round Midnight includes Jimmy Van Heusen's Here's That Rainy Day (tailored for Sinatra as was the classic Oscar winning song All The Way ).
