The music of France’s most beloved entertainer will be recreated at The Gordon Craig Theatre on Tuesday 26th May in ‘Edith Piaf: A Celebration of a Legend’. Award-winning jazz vocalist and entertainer Tina May will bring to life the music of Edith Piaf (1915-1963), France’s national icon and musical legend during an authentic live show. May will sing a selection of Piaf’s best-loved songs including ‘La vie en rose’ (1946) which was voted a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998, ‘Hymne a l’amour’ (1949), ‘Milford’ (1959) and ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’ (1960). May’s astonishing vocal ability has won her worldwide acclaim and watching her capture the magic of Piaf is guaranteed to send a shiver down your spine. May who recorded her first song at the famous Abbey Road studios in the winter of 1991, has toured all over Australia, the Far East, America, Europe and the UK. She was also proud to receive a silver medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians in 1993 and the Vocal Jazz Award at the BT Jazz Awards in 1998. Piaf was discovered by a nightclub owner in Paris in 1935. But it was not until after the Second World War that Piaf became known internationally touring Europe, the USA and South America, before achieving lasting fame with her hypnotic stage presence while performing at the Paris Olympia concert hall between January 1955 and October 1962. To relive Piaf’s legendary music do not miss this spectacular show, which starts at 7.45pm. For tickets which cost £16.50 call the Box Office on 08700 131 030 or visit www.gordon-craig.co.uk

‘The Producers’ Following their highly acclaimed 2008 version of “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, Newcastle Musical Theatre Company return to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle upon Tyne with their production of Mel Brooks' “The Producers”. Anyone familiar with Brooks’ films will rightly expect a very adult and anarchic but hilarious spin on the traditional musical and that is what they get. Max Bialystock is a brash but failed Broadway producer who, together with his rather meek accountant, Leo Bloom, aims to stage a Broadway flop. He has come to the conclusion he can make more money with a failure than he can with a success. So he and Leo search for the worst script they can find. Their foolproof scheme gets complicated when their crass and totally tasteless production turns out to be a huge hit with the public. Adapted from Mel Brooks’ 1968 film by the man himself, this hilarious comedy musical opened on Broadway in 2001 and has since won 12 Tony Awards. With a three year run in the West End it has proved itself to be a crowd pleaser. All the new music was specially written by Brooks for the Broadway stage and, with songs including ‘Springtime for Hitler’ and ‘I Wanna be a Producer’, he has created a tuneful, unusual, hilarious and rather adult musical comedy which is not to be missed.
